Better than ever!
We owned a Leapter L-Max that quit working due to an “accident.” Because our 3 year old has loved and used that machine several times a day we had to replace it. He had learned so much from the previous Leapster and the reviews of the V-Smile were poor, so we decided to go with another Leapster. While we did go back and forth about whether we wanted another L-Max for the TV play capability or whether we wanted the online funcitonality of this new Leapster 2. We had to put some thought into which feature, the TV or online, we would use most. We decided that we would really like the ability to track learning progress on line and that for $10 less, we would rather have that function. We also decided to look for a Leapster TV system, which we found on clearance, to replace the TV play capability of the old L-Max, so he could still use all the games on the TV and yet have 2 seperate toys and develop the motor skills of the 2 systems instead of one. This new Leapster is SO cute. The colors are great, the shape is better than the old ones, in my opinion. The stylus pen is secured by a thin fabric like cord rather than a heavy electronics cord, so it is easier to maneuver and it doesn’t seem like it will break as easily. The sound is better and the screen is just as nice, if not better. We are very happy with this purchase, and our son likes it too. We have not tried the other games yet, but his old ones work just fine, as they are supposed to. I would defintitely recommend this model. I will also update the review when I have used the online functions.

My son’s favorite Leapster cartridge
My son, who is now five, received his leapster last November. He has several cartridges, all of which he enjoys. However, the Math Missions game, which we recently purchased online, seems to have captured his attention in a way that the others did not. While all the Leapster titles attempt to make a game out of learning, this cartridge does an exceptional job. For example, instead of requiring him to identify that 4+5=9, it gives him three fish, weighing 4, 5 and 9 pounds each. He needs to figure out how to put them on a scale to make the scale balance. This is a much more interesting “puzzle” and it teaches what an equation really means, at an intuative level. Another activity reminds me of the old game “Mastermind”, where he needs to figure out the right combination of candies to put in a box. Through trial-and-error and deductive reasoning, he can figure it out. It’s a fun challenge that teaches important logic skills.

The incentive system is also well done. By earning money for doing math tasks, my son can then pay to play “video arcade” games, which are more fun than educational in nature. (The games are simple and just the right level of complexity for 5-7 year olds, along the lines of early video games like pac-man.)He LOVES these games, and is willing to spend hours doing the math puzzles in order to earn the money to play the video games.

This is a great game. I hope Scholastic puts out more cartridges for the Leapster platform.

Excellent Fun Game for Learning Math
The overall design is excellent. Teaching is nicely mixed with fun. The kids got quite intensive Money training. Excellent Addition/Substraction. The multiplication is on the light weight side.

Great learning game..and fun!
We use this game along with the leapster TV. My daughter started using it at age 5, and she’s now 6 and this is still her favorite game to play. When she was 5, she needed a little help with some of the math…I expected that since the game is rated ages 6-9. But, she is now finishing kindergarten and can play the games on her own.

She loves playing the math games and “earning” money that she can then use to play the little arcade games. Truthfully, she doesn’t play the arcade games very much, because she loves seeing her “dollar” amount increase and loves the math games. She doesn’t seem to want to spend her “money” on the arcade games! I think this is great because it also teaches her about money and saving.

I can’t find a single thing wrong with this game…by far one of the most educational leapster games available.

Fun & Sometimes Frustrating.
This game is not as educational as many of the other Leapster games that incorporate math and spelling, however both my 5-year-old and 3-year-old really enjoy playing it.

It has a heavy emphasis on memory skills–it will show you a picture of a monster, then scramble the monster traits (eyes, legs, arms, etc.) and then the child needs to reassemble the monster. The frustrating problem with this game, however, is that it will line up items across the bottom of the Leapster screen and you are then to use the stylus to “point and drag” the monster traits. For some reason, on both of my children’s Leapster handhelds, it is very difficult to actually “pick-up” the monster part. It’s almost as if they software makers put the pieces too low on the screen and they’re in a “dead” area. Initially I thought my son’s handheld was going bad–his is 1 1/2 years older than my daughter’s. However, the game does that very same thing on my daughter’s newer handheld. Anyway, I very often have to help them on this particular game, and I have to really angle the stylus (to where it is just about lying flat on the screen) before I can “pick-up” the piece (sometimes I can’t even get it, and we have to close out the game). Anyway, this can make the game (and there are actually 2 games on this cartridge that have the same problem) very frustrating.

On a positive note, there is another game on the cartridge where the child has to use logic to build a bridge for the little creatures to cross, and this is easy to use with the stylus and can be quite challenging and entertaining for the children.

A Great Game!
Well designed game. We got it right before X’mas weekend for my 6 year old. She beat it in 2 days(and we had a very quiet 2 days). She was so focused on playing with it!
However, it is definately not challenging enough for 7-8 year old kids.

Great Fun!
We just got this game about a month ago and my 5 year old can hardly put it down! He is only in Pre-K, so some of the math parts are a little over his head, but with the “help” button he can just keep right on zipping thru. And even though he has to get help on some of it, he is still hearing the math problems over and over. So he is learning while he is having a blast!
